It's the start of a new year at Galena Park High School and it is time to plan for Art I, Art II, Ceramics, and AP Art History . This will be my 16th year teaching art and my 13th year teaching in Houston. Hope you enjoy the journey.

As an art teacher, one of my duties is t-shirt design, and I love doing it. This is my favorite so far. This project looked too fun. I had to make one for myself. Thanks to wintercroft.com for the template. Middle School students love masks. This one is made using a template created by wintercroft.com. The outer layer is then covered in tissue paper with a layer of Mod Podge to seal it. This is our school's entry into the Klein ISD Diversity Art Contest and an excellent example of blending with Prismacolors. We made these for Valentines Day. We used a heart template and colored paper to create the mosaic. Students had the option of creating an image, word or a pattern within the heart. It's a very simple assignment that leaves the door wide open for creativity. Teaching Crafts is fun. Not a lot of instructions went into this project and that is how I like it. It allows the students the freedom to express themselves in a way they don't often get to and they get to make something to take home and display proudly. Look Mom, I made this!
Hands are one of the most challenging things to draw, but drawing them as shadow puppets made them fun. After many sketches and guided practice, my students were ready to tackle our first major project of the year. I was really impressed with the results and look forward to what these talented artists will create this year.
